Greek island travel in the 1960s

Please follow me:

Who remembers the Greek island ferry boats of the 1960s?  Peter and I first arrived on the island of Sifnos in the Cyclades in April 1963.  That was the start of our life spent painting and writing for a living.  We are now retrieving  memories of our early years in Greece helped by the photographs we took at the time.    We kept the negatives.  With toay’s technology it’s possible to turn these into digital images which can also be printed.  Our past is brought into the present.  Greece is still our favourite subject for painting and writing.  If only our youthful bodies could re-appear too!

  1. Hi Susan,

I love your photographs of Sifnos as it was in the 1960s. Have a look at my Sifnos instagram page, and hopefully there’ll be some images that take you there! If you had any photos you wouldnt mind me sharing on there, I’d be delighted! I’m a fellow Sifnos convert, and been going there for 25 years, and getting married in Vathy next month!

    Best,

    James

    • I’m pleased you found my website and the page which mentions or shows a few photos of Sifnos. Thanks for loving the photographs I’ve included so far in the book Peter and I are producing. I’m not going to share any photographs as yet, if at all – we’ll want sales of the book eventually. I’ve just spent a very enjoyable few minutes running through your photographs on instagram. We have visited the island a couple of times since the 60s when we spent long periods there before changing our allegiance to Amorgos which was more remote. Very good friends of ours built a house in Vathy : a German-Greek couple called Eva and Costas. I don’t know whether you came to the island in time to meet them? In any case, very best wishes for you wedding next month.
